Knowing what a job involves takes some of the stress out of it. Here are the urgent calls we take most in Monrovia.
The lockout
Usually the simplest: the locksmith opens the lock with picks or bypass tools, checks your ID and you are back inside. High-security deadbolts take longer and very occasionally need drilling, which should be explained and priced first.
The snapped key
Keys break when they are worn or when a lock is stiff — and in dry, dusty weather locks get stiff. The locksmith extracts the broken part, checks the cylinder and cuts a replacement key.
The stolen key
If your keys were taken along with something that shows your address, rekey or replace the locks the same day. Rekeying is often enough and keeps your existing hardware.
The break-in
Police first. Then the locksmith replaces damaged locks and strikes and secures the door. A badly split frame may need a carpenter later.
The car
Keys locked in, keys lost, an ignition that will not turn. Many cars can be opened and have keys made on site; some newer models need the dealer.
The door that will not lock
If a deadbolt will not throw, the door has often shifted rather than the lock failing. Adjusting the strike can fix it in minutes. If not, the lock needs repair.
When to call 911 instead
- Someone is hurt or in danger.
- A child or pet is locked in a car on a hot day.
- You suspect someone is inside your home.
When a locksmith will say no
A reputable locksmith will not open a property for someone who cannot show they live there or own it. That includes disputes between partners or roommates. It is frustrating in the moment, but it protects everyone.
